A Guide to Buying Junior Golf Clubs
Article by Megan Sara Jones
As more and more young people have started to play golf, manufacturers have begun to develop a rang entirely for these players. No longer does a younger player have to use an adult set of clubs which is far too big for them.
Gone are the days when a club was just cut down to ‘fit’ a smaller golfer. Today clubs for younger players are specially made to be used by smaller people. Today there is a good selection of manufacturers making clubs specifically for juniors.
It is important to remember that with all the different types of clubs to choose from, there are a few differences now between clubs for adults and clubs for young people.
LengthLength should be the first consideration. The idea is to find a set of clubs that is the right length for the junior golfer, but also a set that the junior can grow with. Remember that it is OK for the junior to choke down or grip down on the club. You just don’t want them to move their hands down the grip too much. Handing down your old set to your son is not a good idea and should not be done.
The basic rule is that if the junior player is choking down more than 1½” to 2″, he or she is choking down too much. By choking down more than 2″ they will find that they change their whole swing, requiring them to manipulate the swing to get the club around their body. A set of clubs whose length requires the junior to grip down only 1″ allows them to make a normal swing at the ball, while probably have enough length to get a second year out of the set.
Shaft FlexSecondly we should consider the shaft flex. The main problem with chopped down clubs for juniors is the stiffness of the shafts. When you cut 4″ of length off a golf club, you make the shaft extremely stiff. And this explains why juniors using cut-down clubs are unable to get any height on their shots. Again, not a good idea to hand down those old clubs in the loft.
One good thing with new sets is that the manufacturers are now making shafts that are the right flex for kids’ swing speeds. Using light-weight steel and graphite have made junior golf clubs a great buy for youngsters. The shafts of junior clubs today are so flexible that you can bend them with your hands. So check to make sure that your child’s set of clubs has a good, flexible shaft.
WeightWeight of the golf club should be a consideration to junior golfers. If the club is overly heavy, the child will struggle to take the club to the top of the backswing. The struggle to get the club back causes a manipulation of the swing that results in inconsistency. A lighter club will help the junior get the club in the correct position at the top of the swing, and lead to an easily repeatable swing. Clubs these days have addressed this problem very well.
Just like with shaft flex, most manufacturers make junior clubs with lighter heads and shafts. So before you buy, just make sure to check the overall weight of the clubs. You want clubs that are light enough to fit your child’s age. He needs this for a good backswing and thus a good shot.
Grip SizeWhen purchasing clubs for a young player paying attention to grip size is important. It is a new thought in the last few years. In the past, when clubs were cut down any grip that fitted the shaft was put on. However oversized grips cause the same problems for juniors as they do for adult golfers. If the grip feels like a baseball bat, it’s going to change the basic swing mechanics.
So when buying a set of junior clubs, make sure they are fitted with junior grips. A thinner grip will make all the difference in your child’s game.
As adults, we realize how tough golf can be some days and how much the right equipment can help our games. By keeping these considerations in mind when buying junior golf clubs, you can help your junior play better golf, and more importantly, have a better time on the golf course. Hopefully he will continue to play the game when he has clubs that actually help him.

The Monastery of Sant Benet de Bages is a former Benedictine monastery, in the Catalan comarca of Bages. The Romanesque monastery was thoroughly restored at the beginning of the twentieth century by the Catalan architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch. The monastery was founded about 950 by the noble Salla and his consort Ricarda, of the house of the viscounts of Osona . According to the founding legend, Salla traveled to Rome to have his institution authorized, and to have it depend directly on the Holy See, the usual method for preserving the community from interference from the bishop— in this case of Vic— in whose diocese it lay. The abbey church was consecrated 3 December 972, witnessed by a gathering of notables: Borrell II, Count of Barcelona, the bishops Frugifer of Vic, Guisad of Urgell and Pere of Barcelona, the viscount Guadald of Osona, and three of the four offspring of the recently deceased founder, his son Isarn and the sisters Quíxol and Ego, at the head of witnesses both laymen and priests, in a grand ceremonial recorded in the surviving act of consecration. The community was dedicated to the Holy Trinity and to Benedict of Nursia (Sant Benét in Catalan) founder of the order, and Peter and Andrew, all guarantors of its future orthodoxy. The founder secured dispensations that the future abbots would be chosen from among their descendents, making the abbey a form of proprietary church, an agreement that would soon lead to disputes among the various branches of their lineage as to choice of abbots.
From 965, the abbey church held the supposed relics of Saint Valentine, enclosed in a wooden reliquary with plates of silver depicting miracles of Saint Valentine, which was rediscovered in 1863 in the church of Navarcles. At the beginning of the eleventh century the monastery passed under the direction of the Abbey of Saint Peter of Tomeras at Narbonne, from which the community freed itself in 1108. In 1125 Sant Benet de Bages suffered from an attack by Moors that required a rebuilding, financed by local nobles who required in return the right to be buried in its consecrated ground. The most splendid age of Sant Benet de Bages was in the fourteenth century, until the Black Death left the community with only two survivors, in a period that witnessed the beginning of its decline. On 9 November 1593, by order of Pope Clement VIII the community passed under the direction of the Abbey of Montserrat, and remained so until it was suppressed in 1820, serving as a place of retirement for Montserrat’s community of monks. By the "law of desamortización" of 1835, all religious orders in Spain were required to render upo their possessions. The crumbling ancient structure attracted the interest of intellectuals who organised visits to it in the late nineteenth century. The architect Puig i Cadafalch and the painter Ramon Casas encouraged the mother of Casas to buy the property in 1907; in 1910 it passed into the hands of Casas, who commissioned Puig i Cadafalch to restore it. Since 2000, when it was purchased from Casas’ heirs it has belonged to the Caixa de Manresa, a financial institution that has undertaken its maintenance.
